Bipradas Palchoudhuri was the second grandson of Prankristo Palchoudhuri, an extremely wealthy zamindar of Nadia District in Bengal. The Palchoudhuri clan originally hailed from Boinchee in Hooghly District, but due to the Maratha inclusions, they had moved to Natuda in Nadia District, where they prospered. Prankristo’s only son, Madhusudan, had two sons, Nafar Chandra and Bipradas.
Born in 1856, Bipradas was educated in Krishnagar Collegiate School. Passing the University Entrance Examination in 1873, he gained admission to Presidency College, Calcutta – an event marked by the gift of a clock to the college by his brother Nafar Chandra. Bipradas studied science and mathematics and passed the F.A Examination in 1875.
In 1876, Bipradas married Radhasundari, daughter of yet another Zamindar from Debipur. Leaving behind his young wife and eldest son Manmatha, Bipradas sailed to England to complete his education. One of his co-travellers was the poet Dwijendralal Ray, also from Nadia.
He joined the Iron and Steel Institute of London and contributed original papers on mathematics, which won him the title of A.M.I.C.E. In 1883, he qualified as a Mechanical Engineer.
